Meeting the President
Last week the entire US Olympic and Paralympic teams were invited to visit to the White House. Our one-day visit was filled with suits, ties, fine china, Senators, Congressmen, and of course the President. The whole crew of athletes were able to roam around the bottom two floors of the White House for about an hour, taking pictures, exploring and catching up with the friends we had made in Vancouver.
After checking out the paintings, sculptures and artwork that fills the White House we were all separated into groups by our sport, and put into separate rooms. Everyone patiently waited as the Vice President and his wife made the rounds through the groups. When they got to us we all shook hands, snapped some photos and chatted for a quick minute.
After they'd moved on, President Obama and Mrs. Obama came into our room to shake our hands and take some pictures. They were very warm and friendly and chatted with us about snowboarding, and the possibility of President Obama learning the tricks of the trade. Mrs. Obama told him that it might be a bit much for an Island boy.
After they left the room we were all extremely excited that they seemed to especially enjoy our rowdy group of snowboarders.
After the White House visit we headed to the Supreme Court. We all got to mill around the building built entirely of marble, check out the actual courtroom, and look at all the art pieces they have on display. Once it was all over and we headed back to our hotel the entire day almost seemed surreal. While there are very few people that actually get to tour the White house and the Supreme Court, we were able to do it together with our large group of friends… what a bonus to meeting the President!
